Wow…what a snowy Morning!!!  This is what we look like!

(Husband is on the right, I am on the left with the droopy branches!!!LOL)

TODAY…a little “lesson” on hooking by the seat of your pants!!!  Or…using leftover woolworms in hooking.  : )

Here is my picture today so you can see my changes so far:

I have made the picture have a little more contrast than the rug really has so I can show you what I am doing!!  : )  You will note that I have changed the wagon to red with the brown stripes so it shows up better against the green. 

I have taken out that light strip of “grass” that was so prominant and also took out another light strip beneath the wagon.  When you are grabbing misc. leftover worms to hook with, you can get one that looks like it will blend, but taking a picture or standing back and looking at it will show that it draws too much attention to itself!!  : )

You might say that the two “flowers” in the wagon look like “blobs”…(now you know you were just saying that to yourself!!!LOL)…but because I want very little detail in this section – just the wagon to draw attention – I am keeping them blobs until I finish the rug.  Then, if they need adjusting, I will do it at the end.

Now…look at the right hand sheep!  Do you see that one back leg is lost in the green background?  I need to adjust that! : )

Also, do you see that the darker green strips that I grabbed to do part of the grass behind the right hand sheep look like a hole in the grass or a pile of “poo” since it is behind the sheep? LOL  As I said, I have given this photo a higher contrast than it really has but still when I stood back and looked at the rug, that dark green shape doesn’t go along with the rest of the grass.  I want the grass to be “random” with motion…otherwise, I would have just used the same colour for the grass section…!!!

Don’t be afraid to just start out on a rug with an idea or two about what colours you want to use.  Also, use up those woolworms on something other than circles, squares or straight lines if you are not happy doing those types of rugs!!!

I will post a picture tomorrow of the changes I have made and more progress…I hope to finish the sky too as well as figure out  some of the “flowers” on the lower right!

It’s almost a New Year…and I’m looking forward to hooking a new Blog rug soon! 

I thought you might enjoy seeing the simple little rug I am hooking on now.  This one was just drawn on the backing with no pattern…and I am using many leftover woolworms in the mix.

I like photographing a rug in progress as it helps me to adjust the colours and see where I need a little “tweaking”!!!  LOL  For instance, that one very light strip above the wagon needs to be changed for one that will blend in better.   Although the dark blue “flowers” in the wagon do not stand out, I need “dark” colours to balance the darks of the barn in the upper right.

The flowers on the lower right are just drawn on as a guide…they will be changed as needed as I go.   When I do a rug like this, I simply use all the motifs as guides and I don’t worry about changing most things as I go along!!!!!

We also have a little tree in our little parlour where we put white lights, gold and cream balls and some of the little ornaments we have been given or collected over the years!

Of course, as a Santa-maker, I have a lot of Santas and Father Christmas figures around!

It is a winter wonderland here in Vermont and we are having a White Christmas for sure!

Right after Thanksgiving, I put up a little tree in our dining area that has little white lights and primitive/rusty ornaments!  We enjoy it all through the holidays.  : ) 

We do not get a real tree anymore for inside the house as the places we have for them are right by our heating registers.  they dry out so quickly that they are dangerous.

Along with my “finishing up” of a couple of hooked rugs/chairpads I am also working on some funny hooked pieces! : )  I do love the funny themes!!!!  LOL

I am working on a new hooked rug called “To Ride A Horse Is To Ride The Sky”…featuring a spotted horse with a blue plaid background that I love!  : )  I have been using plaids more and more as I like the look they produce.  This plaid has a green stripe which give a little “zing” and motion to the background! : )

I had fun creating a circle rug for the moving display shown at the Green Mountain Rug Hooking Guild’s show at the Shelburne Museum in Vermont this year.  The display was great and everyone enjoyed it.  Rae Harrell was the inspiration behind the moving display!  : )

I have 2 hooked jesters for my hooked “sign” to go in my booth…so I chose one of the Jesters for this piece and made it very bright with wild colours!!!

Whew!!!  What a year to date!  I think I can start posting again after such a busy time!!  I hope you are all well and hooking away (or doing what makes you happy!)

I finished 4 of the 5 rugs for the special order and am finishing up the 5th.  Just the finish work to do…tacking down the rug tape, putting on the labels, final steaming, etc.  Then off it goes to Idaho. : )  I really love the winter deer…it was such fun to hook! : )

Below are two rugs I am working on now…after finishing these, I hope to do a Blog rug but I keep saying that and then something else comes up!!!!!  LOL 

 The first is “Chicken with Bugs!”  : ) (I had fun doing the bugs and the chicken is a pair of ladies slacks from the Goodwill!)

The second is “Rover’s On The Rug” which is inspired by an antique rug.  The original was in several beige wools with black…but I’m not a “beige” person!!!!  LOL

And here I am, hooking away (at a rug demonstration) where Nancy, one of my hooking friends, caught me!!

This one is the “play on the word crowbar” rug for the show…”Blackbird Singing-A Celebration of Ravens, Crows & their Cousins” at the Northeast Kingdom Artisans Guild Gallery in St. Johnsbury, VT.  It runs from July 9 to August 18.

These small rugs below  (finished & in progress) are for a shop in Idaho and have been such fun!

Since I am also working on a group of Santas (!!!)  I will not be posting much until I get past all this “busyness”!!!  In July, no less!!!  Then, it’s back to normal (!!) life.

I must apologize for not posting for awhile!!! 

While finishing up a couple of things before starting my new Blog rug, I received a commission for 5  small rugs…so I’m working on those now.  : )   They are great fun and are going to a wonderful shop in Idaho.

With the nice weather, we have been outside  working too…you all know what that means!!!  But I hope to start another Blog rug pretty soon!  : )  I hope you are all well, happy and hookin’ away on something fun!!!

Before I get started on my next rug, I’m finishing up a few things!!!

I thought you might enjoy seeing the sign I am hooking for my booth and for any displays I might have with my “funny” rugs!!  LOL

(I have had people asking me for several years why I don’t hook a sign for my booth…and I have a more “sedate” one designed to do later on, but this was too much fun!!)  : )

When I was looking at medieval designs for the idea for “Tom Foolery”, I found several jesters, fools, jugglers and even clown pictures that looked fun to play with!  I decided to do a sign using a couple of figures and played with the design of these two goofy guys!!!!  LOL

This is the top of the rug and I’ll do my lettering below.  I’ll post a picture when I get the lettering done.  (Whoops, I see where I need to take out a bit of the light lavender and put in the darker purple to continue the ruffle on the left figure!)  : )

I had dyed a couple of wool pieces in yellows and apricots so thought I’d use that for a “warm” background!!  The faces were a “hoot” to do…such fun!!!  LOL

TA-DAH!!!!!!  Now you just knew that “Tom Foolery” would be the only guy who would turn up on one of my silly rugs!!!  LOL

I had been looking at medieval illustrations of jesters, clowns, and fools and found one where I liked the top part of the design!  I adapted it to suit myself and then drew the rest of the rug to give it a “foolish” look.  : )   The border changes also show a touch of “tomfoolery” as he blows, not music but balls (rubber, perhaps!!) from his horn!

A closeup of his funny face (below)… and you can also see the grey/cream plaid background with the tiny touch of blue in it!  ; )

I hope you have enjoyed seeing Tom emerge from the wool and  had fun coming along on this adventure with me!  When I have him steamed, I’ll hang him up and take a better picture!  But at least you can see him in living colour!!!  : )

This rug gives you three ideas for borders on fun rugs. Of course, you might want them more “precise” than mine…I like the random look!!!  LOL
