New Hooked Rug – Day 7 ~ Helen’s Tapestry

Today I had fun doing more on the larger deer and hooking some more backgrounds, etc.  You may be asking, “Why is she using such dark background colours?”  I decided to do this rug to give the feeling of the deep woods or the feeling underneath a forest canopy…and there are always dark shadows with some light places.  I thought I’d do the dark backgrounds first and then see if I needed to lighten up some areas later when I get more hooked.

The bird is a natural wool with the wing a very pale yellow.  I will put that natural and/or yellow wool in some other areas too…so that the birds are not the only light areas!!!  There is another area of water coming up too and at the top, some sky.  I’ll see how I handle that when I get there!!!  LOL  No sense deciding on that now!!!  : )

I tried to lighten up the picture so you could see the wools I chose for the backgrounds.  They do blend into a feeling of “dark”!!!!  :  )  Note:  If I have to put a “duller” colour on the birds, I’ll do that after I see what this light colour does when I get more hooking completed!

Happy 4th of July!!!  Enjoy!!!

I am a folk artist now living in Vancouver, Washington. We loved our Vermont "Old Crow Farm" but now I live in a little cottage with a bright yellow front door! I no longer have my business but still love designing and hooking rugs and experimenting with colour...! I do "mystery rugs" on my Blog and that is great fun!

  1. The deer antlers turned out beautifully! I can’t tell you often enough how much I enjoy being able to come here and see what you’ve done. Sunnie, you are such an inspiration to those of us who learn something from you every day!
