New Hooked Rug – Extra ~ Autumn-Halloween Rug

I wanted to show part of this little Autumn-Halloween Rug I’m designing for a pattern (I’ll show the completed sample in a day or two!!)  : )…so I could let those new to hooking see how we can make our lettering stand out when doing a rug.

You can see that some of my lettering is almost disappearing into the background as I hook around the letters!!  : )  A nice trick is to put the lettering in, hook background around the letters and then pull out the lettering and do it again so it stands up just a tiny bit above the background.  It will look much better (if that is what you want!!)  LOL   When I post the picture of the completed sample rug, you’ll see what I’ve done with the lettering!  (So this is the “before”!!)  LOL

This pattern has been great fun to hook and has gone fast…I will have the sample completed in a week!!  (While still working on my two big rugs!! )  It is approx. 19 x 24 inches and has one of my favourite scrappy borders!

I’ll post Helen’s Tapestry later!  : )

Happy Hooking!  : )

I am a folk artist now living in Vancouver, Washington. We loved our Vermont "Old Crow Farm" but now I live in a little cottage with a bright yellow front door! I no longer have my business but still love designing and hooking rugs and experimenting with colour...! I do "mystery rugs" on my Blog and that is great fun!

  1. Sunnie…WOW…where do you get all of that energy? Would you please send some to WI for me? Another way to do lettering…like you said, but with a smaller cut than it will be in the end. Say, if you’re hooking with #8 cut strips, do your letters first in a #6 cut…hook around them and then reverse hook and re-do them in #8 strips. Worked really well for me the times I did it that way. Keep up the good work on alllll of your rugs!!

  2. Super, Jacque!! That’s a great tip!!! : )

I’ll try that next time for my lettering too!!!! : )

    I don’t know about energy…after all, I’m a little old lady! : ) But maybe a tough old crow??? LOL : )
Hugs to you, Sunnie ; )

  3. Sunnie, I love what you’re doing with this rug. It looks to me like it’s going to be another one of my “Sunnie’s Favorites.” I’m loving the Scarecrow!
