New Mystery Rug-“FO”-Nov 2016-Sunnie/rug hooking/hooked rugs-Day 3

Quick post today!!!   Now for a little touch of whimsy and silliness…and a place to put my initials.   🙂

I was simply going to put my initials on a flower stem or leaf, etc but I had done that before.   So,I decided to use one silly bird (or maybe 2!) to hold my “S A”!!!   (As you can see in the photo, I am using up more leftover woolworms when I can.)

I have experimented with putting my initials on my rugs in a creative way after I was told (!!!!) by several rug hookers to “Do It…!!!”   …lol…

So, of course, being a quiet, shy person who always does what people tell me to do (!!!!!)…I now try to do it on many of the rugs I hook.   However, some pieces just don’t have room…so I can put the info on the back!

Here is Progress on Day 3 of “FO”…(there really is a longer title but it takes up too much room on the title box!)

I am a folk artist now living in Vancouver, Washington. We loved our Vermont "Old Crow Farm" but now I live in a little cottage with a bright yellow front door! I no longer have my business but still love designing and hooking rugs and experimenting with colour...! I do "mystery rugs" on my Blog and that is great fun!

  1. It would be so nice if we saw more of the rug when you post. The small segments make it hard to relate, at least for me.

    1. HI Paula…if I were hooking a regular design (and not a “mystery” rug!) , I would show more. However, If I posted the whole rug design or large segments of it, it wouldn’t be a mystery! 🙂

Also, I often change things and redesign these types of rugs as I go along, so many times the rug is not what I first envisioned!!!! 🙂 My goal with these rugs is to show how certain plaid wools hook up, how I go about designing one of these, often with a story behind the piece and explaining some of my colour choices or mistakes I make. I am hoping that some of the things I am talking about will be helpful to others.

Years ago (2010), when I did “Little Allerton” by Jane McGown Flynn, I did just what you suggested…showed more of the rug because it was not a mystery but a commercial pattern. 🙂 Also in 2008, I hooked “Helen’s Tapestry”…pattern by Harry Fraser Co. and showed that as I went along. You can check my archives here for both of those rugs. If I do another commercial pattern, I will certainly do the same which is just what you suggested…!

My smaller 12 x 12’s and other small pieces are also more like what you are talking about. They do not take very long and usually have larger parts of the piece shown.

I simply have fun with these and I enjoy keeping those who wonder “What on earth is she doing????”…in suspense!!!
      Happy Hooking! Sunnie 🙂
