New Mystery Rug 2017-“A Strange Encounter On the Tulip Balcony”-Sunnie/rug hooking-Day 16 Finished!

I Finally had some time to hook on my rug and get it finished…!   🙂   Hooray!

“A Strange Encounter On the Tulip Balcony” has a lot of silliness in it (!!!!)…and there are 3 different stories that could be told with the design of this rug!   🙂

My story at first was a case of Misdirection where a young lady running for a Cab shouted out at her new admirer, “I’m on Village Street, just look for  the 3rd floor balcony with the tulips!”, as she rides away.    He is thinking, “I’ll climb up to her balcony and surprise her!”         —Also, at the same time, a very nice Bird lady calls out to two gentlemen birds as she flies by… “I’ll be roosting on the balcony with the Tulips!”   They are thinking, “We’ll fly up to that Balcony and surprise her!”

Unfortunately, both the young lady and the Bird lady forgot that in the Spring, EVERYONE on Village street puts out Tulips on their doorsteps and Every balcony is filled with Tulips and other flowers!   So unless visitors know to look for the painted metal tulips on One building…AND they know which third floor balcony is the one mentioned, they can get confused.

And, of course, the young man and the gentlemen birds were confused…!

The young man is climbing up to the wrong Balcony and the two dapper gentlemen “birds about town” (!!!) have mistakenly visited the wrong Balcony too!   🙂   By her posture and expression, the young lady is thinking “What on earth is going on here?”

One day, as I worked on this and was looking at it from a distance, I got to laughing because another story came to mind.   As we all know, the Stork brings babies (!!!!!!!) and these two birds could be storks, letting the young woman know that her soon-to-be-born baby will be a Boy (by the blue flowers!!!)

Unfortunately, they are visiting the wrong Balcony because this young lady is NOT expecting!   🙂    She might be thinking, “What kind of a joke is This?”

AND…my Third story would be that this Rug is a celebration of the song “Come Fly With Me” written for Frank Sinatra by composer, Jimmy Van Heusen, with lyrics by Sammy Cahn. (1957)   Check the lyrics and you’ll see it fits almost too well…!!!!!   …lol…

Here we go on Day 16, FINISHED!   Happy Hooking!  Sunnie   🙂

New 2017 Mystery Rug-“A Strange Encounter On TTB”-Sunnie/rug hooking/hooked rugs-Day 15

Oh No!!!   STILL working on more of this????????   …lol…

Remember, silliness takes time!!!   🙂   I promise that when I finish this part, I won’t be doing any more gray and white!!!!!!!

So here’s the scoop…This wall piece, 24 x 32 inches (not adding a border) was inspired by a small troll or gnome climbing up what looked like a beanstalk!  (in a medieval manuscript)

That got me thinking about climbing.   (however, I did not use that illustration in this piece)

I saw an antique book cover with tulips and that book cover got me thinking about tulips and the houses in European villages with flowers all around their houses, window boxes, etc.

Then I was thinking about a design that might work and as I was looking through my books and online, I saw a very ethereal angel…very delicate and beautiful…but what jumped out at me was the Line of her head and neck!  But I didn’t want a beautiful angel…just the lines of her head and neck!!!!!      That got me thinking about misdirection and unintended consequences…and a funny idea popped into my mind…!

I looked for an idea to complete my “in my head” design and found just what I wanted for inspiration in an antique illustration…!

Now my final design doesn’t look much like the things that inspired me…(!!!!) but mixing them together and experimenting, I found the funny design I put on the backing!

So here is Progress on Day 15…getting closer to the finish…this has been great fun!!!!!!!   Happy Hooking,  Sunnie   🙂

New Mystery Rug-2017-“A Strange Encounter On TTB”-Sunnie/rug hooking/hooked rugs-Day 14

Hooray!!!!!!…I was able to do more background and finish the top of the stem/vine over the weekend.   🙂

I am debating whether or not to add a border to this piece.   I really think it doesn’t need it but when it is finished, I’ll look carefully at it again!   Sometimes a piece just doesn’t seem to need a border…but, of course, a border can actually ADD importance to the center!!!!   Since this piece is “outdoors”, I think a border might give a feeling of “containment” and I’d rather have it open.   We’ll see!   (My “Enigma” rug below was an outside scene but I think the border added importance to the center designs)

Some of my experiments might seem goofy to everyone else…but I am actually learning things!!!!!    I am always thinking about what is important to Me in the design and hooking of my rug…and so I do break some “rules” from time to time!   🙂

As many of you know, my advice to new rug hookers is to listen and learn from all of your teachers…then do what you want to do!   Think both “inside” and “outside” the box.   Sometimes students are intimidated by wanting to do something that others think is “wrong” or advice is given to make their designs more “refined”, “usual” or “mainstream”.   If that is what you want to do…great…!   But what if you want to do wild and crazy things?????    …lol…

So here we go with Progress on Day 14!   I think I can finish this by the end of the week if “Life” doesn’t intervene!!!!

Happy Hooking!   Sunnie   🙂

New 2017 Mystery Rug-“A Strange Encounter OTTB”-Sunnie/rug hooking/hooked rugs-Day 13

Hooking more background but I was able to hook a couple more motifs today!      🙂

I think the lighter green will do fine…if it fades a bit into the background…that’s OK!   It will just look a bit “wispy”!   …lol…

These two tulips are not outlined either.   I wanted to outline the three tulips on the right side of the piece to add “weight” and make them stand out a little more against the background.   These other three, without outlining, are an experiment.   🙂

As for more about the story behind the rug…how many times have we become confused about directions that someone has given us in a hurry and found ourselves not finding “the place” without some mistakes!  We may have given directions and instructions in error ourselves!!!!!

Sometimes the mistakes may be quite funny too, such as joining the wrong “Family Reunion” at the park because you see someone who “looks” like your Uncle Fred…!   (But he isn’t..!)

So here is Progress on Day 13…I’m about 2/3rds done at this point.   Happy Hooking!   Sunnie   🙂

New 2017 Mystery Rug-“A Strange Encounter OTTB”.Sunnie/rug hooking/hooked rugs-Day 12

It’s Tax time!!!!   Great fun…yes???   …lol…

I remember a  business student from college coming into the grocery store as Joe and I were just leaving.  (many years ago)     He was smiling and we asked him what was making him so happy!   He said, “It is tax season…I just Love working on taxes…it is so much fun!!!!!”   We laughed and said he might want to consider visiting his doctor!!!!!!    🙂

I have been working on background but I did manage to finish the odd motif in the corner and put in another tulip and another blue flower!!!!   (The tulip is not outlined)

This rug is about a couple of mistakes, and the results thereof…!    (I DO hope there are no mistakes on my tax return!!!)

Progress on Day 12…Happy Hooking!   Sunnie   🙂

New 2017 Mystery Rug-“A Strange EOTTB”-Sunnie/rug hooking/hooked rugs-Day 11

Progress on Day 11…something really IS strange!   Happy Hooking!   Sunnie   🙂

New 2017 Mystery Rug-“A Strange EOTTB”-Sunnie/rug hooking/hooked rugs-Day 10

Worked quite a bit today and this rug is such fun!!!!   I know it is a silly idea but I do enjoy silliness and whimsy…I love it in other rug hooker’s rugs too!!!!   🙂

Here is a bit of the story behind this piece.   All of us experience moments when things are unexpected or don’t turn out the way we think they will.   Some moments can change lives, some can put us into a time of sorrow and some can bring us great joy!   And, of course, some moments are really silly!!!   …lol…

I remember a phone call from (I thought…!) my father-in-law.   (from my first marriage)   The voice was right, and he started in talking, without identifying himself, exactly the way my FILaw did,  so when he stopped for breath, I said “Dad, I am not sure what you are talking about.”   And he said, “Honey, I don’t think I’m your Dad!!!”    Turns out he had the wrong number!   🙂

Some moments change your life!   When I went back to college in my 40’s, I took a geography class with Dr. Andress for a basic requirement.   The next year, if I had not changed my mind and stopped at my college campus on a particular day, and if I had not met a student from that geography class who also had not planned to be on campus that day, I probably would not have married my second husband and enjoyed 25 years with a wonderful man!   I am very thankful for that meeting!!!!!   🙂

We all have funny and serious moments!!!   This rug is about having a happy expectation of a  pleasurable meeting and finding that something very odd is going on!   After I started the rug, I also thought of another story that might fit this piece…although that story might be somewhat of a shock!!!!

The different colours in the lower background blend better than they look in the photo with the flash.   They have a more muted look “in person”.

So here is Progress on Day 10…I will wait to do any “tweaking” until the rug is closer to being finished…but I think I am over half finished now!

Happy Hooking!   Sunnie   🙂
