Things are coming together on Day 9…and I’m having fun choosing wools to go with what I have already done. Also, thinking through possible problems and deciding how I’ll handle them! 🙂
This first little photo shows a problem I have with stems and leaves!
Since the brown plaid background is more of a “medium” value, I had been using darker green stems on flowers to show up against the background. However, I needed to use lighter green stems to show up against the figure’s clothing!!!!!
So I decided to keep the lighter wool because it is More important to me to have the curves of the stems show up against the figure than to have them show up against the background. I tried adding some dark tiny pieces in the leaves to see if that helps or is just “distracting”!!! (I can always take them out.)
We will see when the rug is finished if I made the right choice for stems!!!!
…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..I could have Outlined the stems and leaves that go into the background…but I ask myself if the stems and leaves are the main focus of the rug design!!!!!!!!! Of course they are Not…!!! …lol… So we’ll wait until the rug is close to the finish to see if these areas of stems and leaves ruin the whole rug being light and not dark!!!!!!
So here is Progress on Day 9… I had not decided what colour I would use for the underneath garment on the figure…so I rummaged through my “small strips” wool and pinned them up to see what would work. I chose this plaid as it kept the “dark” look of the entire garment but had enough contrast with the “outer robe”. And it had that green stripe. I learn a lot by these experiments!!!!!!! 🙂
Happy Hooking! Sunnie 🙂
I finally got time to hook more on motifs than just on background!!!!! 🙂
Since I didn’t think a nice picture just showing sections of background would be that interesting to you (!!!!!)…here is a better picture of my Progress on Days 7 and 8.
The idea for this rug started with a little drawing in the border of a manuscript from the 10-12th century and it isn’t even adapted into the rug! But, like many of my rugs, it started a thought process that led to my design.
I often am drawn to shapes too…I’ve said that before! 🙂 Sometimes it is just a shape that “speaks” to me…such as the shape of the bottom of a robe, the shape of an arm, or the angle of a neck and head…human or otherwise. Often, I don’t even use that actual motif but draw my own design using that shape. Or it is a colour that I see…I am wondering right now about using a pale-ish green (maybe chartreuse!!!) for a background someday! Who knows! …lol…
Anyway…I am off to do more organizing, decorating and hooking today so here is the Progress photo! Happy Hooking and I hope you all have a very pleasant day today!!! Sunnie 🙂
Had a little time to hook yesterday and today…so here’s a quick post…!
Now that I have more pink in the rug, the bright blue of the flowers seems OK, at least for now. We’ll see if it balances out when I get more done. 🙂 I have 2 more blue flowers to hook. I can see more of the rug than you can…and from farther away so it is easier for me to judge my experiments and see if they seem to be working!!!!
We had cold and rain this morning, sunshine and warmer temps this afternoon and I just started outside and it is raining again!!!!! …lol…
At least I know what is happening with my hooking!!!!!!
Here is Progress on Day 6…Happy Hooking! Sunnie 🙂
I did get some more done on my rug…in a couple of areas!! 🙂
I decided to jump around the rug a little as I wanted to test some more colours on the backgrounds! Quick post today…I’m working on more Spring organizing and decorating…so when I get more of that done, I’ll be back at the hooking frame once again later today (I hope!!!!)
HAPPY SPRING, everyone!
Here is Progress on Day 5… Happy Hooking! Sunnie 🙂
More experiments on Day 4…! 🙂
I am trying out a blue for a tiny flower. In the photo, it looks brighter because of the flash…but “in person” it very slightly sinks into the background. This is what I want it to do…be bright but not too bright.
I could make it stand out more if I outlined it, but that would place too much importance on it and several other tiny flowers that I have yet to hook! Of course, we always have to decide what we want to focus on and what motifs we want to have in the design but not “take over”!!!!! …lol…
When I have more of the rug hooked, I will be able to tell if I need to change the blue flowers…they may be too bright. However, I love this blue and want to use it…so I am hoping that my experiment with the bright pinks in the larger flowers will be successful in handling this blue!
So here is Progress on Day 4…Happy Hooking! And Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Sunnie 🙂
Whew!!! I finally got my “airbag” recall change done on my Subaru!!!! No one has been able to ride in the front passenger seat since last Autumn when the list of cars added mine. So we are good to go once again!!!! 🙂
Quick post today! I am experimenting with background wool on the area above the brown lines and flowers…the lower bg is “cooler” and the upper bg is “warmer”.
I wanted to do a change in background and in the flowers also…so this is the plaid I am using! I am not using the lightest strip in the plaid…keeping that strip to use later on something else.
I love the plaid colours but it hooks as a “medium” value! I have to plan the other colours carefully so they won’t get lost against the background.I am outlining the upper flowers and changing them a bit too…!
So…here is Progress on Day 3…experimenting is so much fun…I really enjoy it and, although it takes a lot of time, what I learn is worth it…!!!!!!!
Please stay safe if you are having bad weather!!!
Happy Hooking! Sunnie 🙂
Hooking right along on this piece!!! This part is easy and fun…however, I do have to try out (more experimenting!!!!!) the background wools I have pulled out of my stash so far.
Here is a picture of what I am using for background…
.…………………………….a lot of pale wools, quiet plaids, mottled pieces. Let’s hope I can get this part of the rug background finished with what I have. If I need to choose other background wools for the rest of the rug I can figure that out later!!!!!! …lol… I hope you can see the different wools used in the photo below. When seen from a distance, the background wools blend (with subtle colour changes).
I am drawing and re-drawing this part as I go…but because of the “sections”, it is pretty easy. I do have scribbles all over the rug, however, and I am always anxious to get that part covered!!!!
So here is Progress on Day 2… Hope you are keeping safe from the wintry weather…here in Vancouver (WA) we have more rain today. Happy Hooking! Sunnie 🙂
