New 2018 Mystery Rug-“All Things Belong to Cats!”-Sunnie/rug hooking/hooked rugs-Days 17-21-FINISHED

Hooray…after a “hooking marathon” (!!!), I have finished this rug!   🙂

The Irish-English proverb is…”In a Cat’s eye, all things belong to Cats!”

At 28 x 39 inches, this is a larger rug than I thought I would do when I first started designing it.   But hooking in my “freestyle” or “stewpot” style, things just evolve sometimes!!!   …lol…   This was such fun and I was experimenting so much that I have spent a lot of 6-7 hours a day hooking on it.

When I make stew or soup, I start out with a base of broth or french onion soup, etc. and then toss in anything I think will make a good tasting blend of meat,  vegetables and seasonings when finished.   This is the way I hook almost all the time now and it’s just what I did on this rug!

I started with the base (the background wool), added the cat figure (inspired by an antique primitive painting of a cat on wood), remembered an old saying about cats and looked that up…and went from there.   Fish, mice, birds, bugs, etc. are all things cats like…so Celtic fish, a mouse from a free clipart design,  my own bug and bird sketches and a sunflower from an antique botanical book were added to the mix!

Now my designs don’t look much like the originals as they are my interpretations hooked in my own folk art style…but the inspiration came from those things!   So… they were gathered together and thrown into the pot!   I love to add “confetti” dots to my rugs… so the “seasoning” is in all colours that I thought would add some fun to this one.

My main problem was working with the Cat face.   I wanted it to have some “realism” so I stared a lot at a photo of my own cat’s face plus about 30 other cat faces in all mediums.   For me, “realism” is foreign!!!!!   🙂       This face isn’t Really realistic as I would have had to dye wool, properly shade and hook strips in the proper fur growth direction, etc. and I did not want to go that far!!!!!   But I hope that the face begins to resemble a real cat and not a cartoon!

I still have some “tweaking” to do on the cat’s whiskers…I wanted just a light touch using wool yarn and sewing it into the hooking.

My cat, Cassie, was a wonderful cat and had a lot of expressions.   I wanted the Face and Eyes to draw the viewer because that was the focus of this piece.   (Also, the Green of the lettering is the same Green as the cat’s eyes…and that green is used nowhere else on the rug! )   I chose a font that looked lively and fun for this piece…and I really like how it turned out.   🙂

The cat’s body and all the rest of the rug is not realistic at all as that was not necessary…I just had fun with the colours and the design.   I gave the Sunflower a little “life” by adding vine “arms” and “feet”…it was fun to see the vines twining around the rug!!!

The border, which took hours and hours of work (!) was not planned.      It just popped into my head one day so I did it…!      I like it…it makes me think of fairy tales and fantasy …and I like the “orderly” surrounding the “chaos” in the rug center.   It isn’t “geometric” in the sense that all of the blocks are exactly the same size.   But it looks fairly “orderly” which is as close as I come to hooking geometrics!!!!!   …lol…

So here is the Finished rug on day 21…It has been delightful to hook and has become one of my favourites!   I like the “slightly smug” cat, the old saying, the combination of motifs from different centuries and the plays on words with the green of the cat’s eyes matching the lettering, etc.   It is exactly the way I like to work…and I like the finished “Stew”.   Thank you for coming on this adventure with me…Happy Hooking!   Sunnie   🙂

New 2018 Mystery Rug-“…ATBTC”-Sunnie/rug hooking/hooked rugs/folk art-Days 14, 15, 16

We had snow last night so all is white…but it is supposed to leave us soon so we’ll see!!!!!    (I’ll get out my snow shovel and clean up a bit…I am thankful for my garage as almost all of my neighbors’ cars are parked outside.   Garages have been converted to rooms or used up as storage spaces.   I have “stuff” in mine too…but still can park my car inside!!!!)

……………………………………………

Carole asked me what I do with all my rugs!   🙂   Here is a sample…I use all of my home as a Gallery …Except my living-dining room and my kitchen.   I haven’t completed hanging rugs as I have electrical and painting to do in my home…but I still have lots of rugs up now.   I rotate them for seasons and just for fun.

Here are rugs in Entry wall, my Office, Hallway and the door (and wall) into my bedroom.   Even the 2 bathrooms are hung with rugs…my 3 apartment signs are in one bathroom!   🙂

TODAY’S POST…………….Yes…I have been working (!!!) but on filling in background and hooking more of that black and white border!!!!!   I was crazy to do this border on a larger rug…but no one has said I am in my right mind…!!!   …lol…

However, giving you pictures of background hooked and days of black and white border, I thought I’d wait until I had something a bit different to show.   After all, 3 days worth of the same border might get a bit tiring!!!!

I decided to place my initials in leaves on the right side of the rug and use the same green as the sunflower leaves, etc.   Also, the letters are done with the leaf vein wool so I think they will blend in.   If I find that the lettering is too prominent, I can simply hook a different green or a quiet tan in the leaves!   🙂

I have also worked a bit on the part you can’t yet see…and it is much more time-consuming.   I can spend three or four hours hooking on the black and white border and get quite a bit done…but I spend the same amount of time on another motif and get a small area finished.

That being said, this is turning out to be one of my favourite rugs!    I knew it would be fun (I always have fun!!!) but I really like how this is turning out.   It reminds me of something special…so I am smiling a lot while I hook it.   🙂

As you know, I like doing some of the tedious and/or boring work as I go along and not save it until the finish…!   I can’t imagine doing All the border or a big portion of the background after all the motifs are finished.   I’d be screeching and banging my head against the wall…!!!   (And That is not a pretty sight…!)

So here is Progress on the three days…14, 15 and 16.   Because of the size of the rug, I am just showing you the new area I am hooking, but I hope to finish this rug by next weekend if all goes well.   Happy Hooking (or whatever you are doing!)   Sunnie   🙂

New 2018 Mystery Rug-“…ATBTC”-Sunnie/rug hooking/hooked rugs/folk art-Day 13

I keep saying that this rug is such fun…but it is because I am trying something new…that combination of a bit of “realism” within a folk art design.   I need to do this because I want one of the motifs to have a “real” element to it…because it enhances my design and, hopefully!!!, captures the viewer’s attention.

It isn’t easy to combine “realism” with fantasy, at least for me, because I don’t do anything “realistic”.   I never hook a real landscape with sky and clouds the way they really look.   I don’t hook animals that look “real”…mine are simply my interpretation of real things.   You know what they are, but they are not realistic…!

Now any of us Could hook a photo of a child sitting by a river (realistically) and then have a cartoon character rowing by in a boat, etc.   But I am talking about Combining the realistic and the folk art in the same character or motif….!   Anyway, it is all great fun!   🙂   I hope all will become clear when you see the finished piece!

I’m not sure if I will succeed…but I am enjoying trying!!!   …lol…

So here is Progress on Day 13…the first blue fish asked for a companion…so, of course, I had to hook another fish..!   I was tempted to hook a red one for Dr. Seuss…” One fish, two fish, Red fish, Blue fish”…but red wouldn’t go with my other colour choices.   (I am hoping the mouse will be happy with his fish and bug friends and won’t ask for another mouse!!!!)

Happy Hooking…and I’m glad you are coming with me on this silly adventure!   Sunnie   🙂

New 2018 Mystery Rug-“…ATBTC”-Sunnie-rug hooking/hand hooked rugs/folk art-Days 11-12

Quick post today!!!

Over the weekend I had some time to work on background which takes a lot of time on this rug!!!!!    I have to be careful not to add too much “stuff” as I go along because, unlike a goofy Halloween rug or a “wild and crazy” rug, I want the focus to be on the main part of the design without a lot of distractions!!!   🙂

However, I did have time to add 2 “lollipop” flowers (padulas!!!) to keep the bug and mouse company!!!!   I have used a darker green for the stems and leaves because I want them to fade into the background some.   I don’t want to take away from the green I am using in the rug center!   Of course, the multicoloured dots all over the piece are like confetti thrown in a celebration!   And this rug IS a celebration of sorts…especially for one of the motifs!!!!    …lol…

Here is an “Extra” photo of the background plaid and the colours in it.   This is why I love plaids…they give “life”, “motion” and “interest” to a background that almost “reads” as a solid colour.  (Looking at the rug “in person” and from a distance.)    I think it shows off the motifs beautifully while drawing minimal attention to itself.

So here is Progress on the 11th and 12th day…I am loving working on this rug and have been doing some hooking instead of what I am supposed to be doing!!!   I really need to dust and mop a couple of floors!!!!!   But the hooking is so much fun, I keep putting it off.   I’ll go do some cleaning after I post this today!   Happy Hooking!!   Sunnie   🙂

New Mystery rug-2018-“…ATBTC”-Sunnie/rug hooking/hooked rugs/folk art-Day 10

Haven’t had much time to hook the last couple of days…but Hooray!!!!!!…I got some time for today’s post…!   🙂

As you have probably gathered from the rug designs I do…I love to add “critters” to my rugs…in various places on the design just for fun.   This little guy was a friend of the bug…so, of course, when I included the bug above him, I had to add him too!!!!   …lol…

And, of course, I had to add some “cheese” for him.   🙂   It makes a nice spot of the bright yellow so I think it will work.   I won’t have to add a yellow dot in that place.

So here is Progress on Day 10…Hope you are all having fun and enjoying your art or craft…wherever in the world you are!

Happy Hooking!   Sunnie   🙂

New 2018 Mystery Rug-“…ATBTC”-Sunnie/rug hooking/hooked rugs/folk art-Day 9

Getting closer to the bottom of the left side of the rug and deciding if I want to make a transition to a different wool background!   Sometimes I do this…even if the background wool is very similar to the one I have just used.   I’ll decide after looking at the rug (and my wool) for awhile!!!!!    🙂

One thing I wanted to mention is the concept of using a motif in different ways to suit your needs!   The little picture below is the one of the bird on a rather odd “flower “motif.   The little sketch did not work the way I wanted so I just took the green stem and “leaves”, turned that part upside down and put the “flower” part on the stem!   This works as a pedestal for the bird to stand on.   …lol…

There are always so many possibilities if we learn to look at the world in a different way and be open to change.   If I find a flower that I like but I don’t like the stem and leaves, I either draw one I DO like or look for an antique illustration, Dover book or clip art that I can adapt.   If I were doing a realistic rug, I would probably want to hook the natural flower and foliage…but when I hook a fanciful rug, I can change things to suit myself…!   🙂

I have been working more on background and have finished my blue fish as well as a large insect…!      🙂   Now to do that leaf and more hooking tomorrow!!!!

So here is Progress on Day 9…If you look at the bug and the fish, you’ll see that they have tiny white “highlights” in their eyes.   Since the space is so tiny, I use white sewing thread and hand-sew a small dot in each eye. (  I really can’t hook in even a tiny piece of wool on these eyes!)   Happy Hooking!   Sunnie   🙂

New 2018 Mystery Rug-“…ATBTC”-Sunnie/rug hooking/hooked rugs/folk art-Day 8

Quick post today…….Hooray!   I was able to do quite a bit of hooking over the weekend…!   🙂

However, about 4 hours of that was on a part of a motif that is about 6 inches square!!!!!!!   …lol…   and that you can’t see yet.   That’s what happens when I use a #3 and #4 cut.   🙂

I did get some more background and Sunflower hooking done as well as part of a fish.   I know you were just waiting for me to hook a fish…yes?   So I am!!!!!   I decided not to do the fish scales as they were just distracting…so I am hooking a couple of mottled blues on this fish.   I am not sure why the fish is grinning…maybe he knows something we don’t…!

Another of my experiments is with realism and with fanciful motifs.   It is combining a bit of realistic presentation within a fanciful design.   It might just be a so-so experiment…but I am having fun with it.   It just takes me longer to do something with which I am not familiar!   (And those tiny strips can drive me nutty if they shred…!!!!!)

So here we go with Progress on Day 8…hope you are all having fun with your rug hooking or whatever in the world you are doing today!!!!   Happy Hooking!   Sunnie   🙂
